Blood groups are classified according to the antigen present on the surface of red cells. Depend upon particular antigen, its respective antibodies are found in serum that respond to foreign particle or any other antigen present on cell surface of blood donor.

BLOOD GROUP AND COVID ?

Coronavirus have dangerous effects on some peoples while others have just flu like symptoms – reason behind this are not only obesity, other co morbidities like hypertension, heart disease, diabetes mellitus, and age but role of blood groups are also the point of concern.

CLINICALLY SIGNIFICANT BLOOD GROUP

There are almost not less than 300 blood groups found but among this only 20 blood group are genetically found but only ABO and Rh system have major role in transfusion reactions.

Researchers from different reviews and researches also found that people with type A blood group have 45 % increase risk of developing worsen outcome of coronavirus
Whereas, people with type O positive blood group have 35 % less chances of developing critical crises of coronavirus.

MECHANISM BEHIND THIS LINK  

However, reason behind this is still unknown and not clearly understood but according to proposed mechanism by studies, Genes take part in controlling the cell surfaces of different blood types. So variability in genes lead to alteration in makeup of different cell surfaces and have different affinity for bacteria that will ultimately link with variability of symptoms in different types of blood groups.

From previous researchers we also know that blood type also have major role in clotting of blood, which is also the worsen outcome in ventilated patients of coronavirus pandemic.

But these researches are not sufficient to support the link between severity of symptoms of coronavirus and blood group types. It should require more work and information to give it an authentic underlying mechanism. 

DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS 

Scientist collected data from three different hospitals of developed country for analysis in which 2,173 are COVID Positive and 23,000 are Non-COVID.

From deep study they found that individuals have blood group A type either A positive, A negative, AB positive and AB negative having greater risk of developing infection whereas with O positive and O negative individual have lesser risk of developing COVID critical symptoms.

One study conducted by Biotech Company to validate the link between blood group and coronavirus severity. They conducted the online survey from everywhere included the heath care workers and front line healthcare worker who have great exposure with COVID positive patients everyday.

It is concluded from study that individual having blood group O have lesser chance of developing critical symptoms of coronavirus.

According to researchers it is also mentioned  that other factors like sex, age, body mass index (BMI) and other co morbidities have role in developing the critical symptoms of coronavirus that we not neglect.

So until and unless blood groups will not link with other factors this study will not valid.
